The Lash Extension Application Process: What to Expect

Eyelash Extensions

If you're considering lash extensions for the first time — or just want a refresher on what the process involves — this guide walks you through each step of the application, from consultation to aftercare.

Eyelash extensions are applied individually to your natural lashes using a semi-permanent, lash-safe adhesive that won’t irritate the eyes or damage your natural lashes when properly applied. On average, 80–140 extensions are applied per eye depending on your desired look and lash health.

While techniques can vary slightly between salons, here’s a general breakdown of what you can expect during your lash appointment:

1. Consultation & Evaluation

Before getting started, your lash technician will:

  •  Discuss the benefits and potential risks of lash extensions

  •  Ask about any eye conditions, allergies, or sensitivities that might make lash extensions unsuitable for you

  •  Request that you remove contact lenses if you're wearing them

This is also your opportunity to ask questions and share your goals.

2. Choosing Your Lash Look

Next, your lash artist will ask what kind of result you’re after — natural enhancement or full-glam volume. Together, you'll select:

  •  Length of the extensions

  •  Curl type

  •  Style or shape (cat eye, doll eye, etc.)

To create a more natural and flattering look, most lash artists use a mix of lengths — typically placing longer extensions on the outer corners and shorter ones closer to the inner eye.

3. Preparing the Eye Area

Once you’re lying down comfortably with your eyes closed:

  •  Your lash artist will cleanse the eye area thoroughly to remove any makeup, oil, or bacteria

  •  It’s helpful (and time-saving) if you arrive with no eye makeup or skincare on

Clean lashes help ensure a stronger bond between your natural lash and the extension.

4. Taping & Gel Pad Application

To prep for the lash application:

  •  A gel pad is applied under each eye to keep lower lashes out of the way and provide contrast for easier application

  •  Medical-grade tape is used to secure the gel pads — it doesn’t touch your lashes and shouldn’t feel uncomfortable

You’ll keep your eyes gently closed throughout the application process, which can take 1 to 2 hours, depending on the set you’ve chosen.

5. Lash Extension Application

Now comes the detailed work:

  •  Your artist uses tweezers to dip each extension into lash adhesive

  •  Each extension is carefully bonded to one individual natural lash

  •  For fuller styles like volume or hybrid sets, multiple fine extensions may be fanned by hand and applied to one natural lash

The process is completely painless, though it may feel unusual having tools working close to your eyes while closed.

6. Drying Time

Although lash adhesive dries quickly, your artist may:

  •  Use a mini fan to speed up the curing process

  •  Let the lashes air dry naturally for around 10 minutes

Either way, your eyes will remain closed until everything is fully set.

7. Finishing Touches

Once your extensions are secure:

  •  The tape and gel pads are gently removed

  •  Your lash artist may brush through your new lashes with a spoolie to separate and fluff them

  •  You’ll be asked to slowly blink open your eyes — and admire the transformation!

If you’re prone to sensitivity, let your technician know ahead of time so they can be extra gentle during removal.

8. Aftercare, Removal & Maintenance

If you're getting lashes just for a special event, they will naturally shed over several weeks — but this can leave your lashes looking uneven. You can:

  •  Have them professionally removed

  •  Try at-home removal (ONLY with the right tools and care)

  •  Or, better yet — book refills every 2 to 3 weeks to maintain a consistently full look

Refills involve reapplying extensions to new growth and replacing any that have fallen out, following a similar (but quicker) version of the full application process.

Final Thoughts

Getting lash extensions is a relaxing experience when done by a trained, certified professional. With the right prep and aftercare, your lashes can look stunning for weeks — and help you wake up every day feeling a little more polished.
