Why Your Lash Extensions Might Not Be Lasting

And What You Can Do About It.

If you’re someone who regularly gets lash extensions, you know just how important good retention is. Ideally, your extensions should stay full and even for several weeks, shedding naturally with your own lashes before it’s time for a fill.

But what happens when they start falling out too soon — or they just don’t last like they used to?

There are some less obvious reasons your lash extensions might be shedding prematurely. Let’s take a look at some surprising culprits that could be sabotaging your retention — and how to avoid them.

Note: This article is for informational purposes only. If you're experiencing unusual lash loss or other symptoms, please consult a medical professional.

1. High Heat and Humidity

Lash adhesive doesn’t love steam or moisture. If you're regularly in hot, steamy environments — think kitchens, hot yoga studios, saunas, or steam rooms — the heat and humidity can interfere with how well the glue sets and holds. This is especially common in warmer months or for those who work with steam-producing machinery.

Tip: Try to limit exposure to steam within the first 48 hours after application and keep it minimal overall if you want your lashes to last longer.

2. Health Conditions That Affect Hair Growth

Your lashes are hair — and just like the hair on your head, they’re influenced by your overall health. Conditions like:

  •  Hypothyroidism

  •  Blepharitis

  •  Hormonal imbalances

...can all impact the lash growth cycle and bonding process, causing your extensions to fall out faster than expected.

3. Skincare Products (Especially Oily or Active Ingredients)

What you put near your eyes matters. Oil-based skincare and products containing active ingredients like exfoliants can break down lash adhesive or create a barrier that prevents proper bonding — especially in the days leading up to your appointment.

Tip: For better retention, avoid using oily eye creams, heavy serums, or facials that involve the eye area both before and during your lash-wearing period.

4. Touching, Rubbing, or Playing With Your Lashes

As hard as it can be, avoid the urge to touch or rub your extensions. Our fingers carry oils and bacteria, which can weaken the adhesive and increase shedding. The less contact, the better!

5. Stress and Its Surprising Impact on Lash Cycles

Periods of high stress can disrupt your natural hair growth — including your lashes. You might notice more shedding or slower regrowth. If your lash retention has suddenly changed during a stressful time, this could be the reason.

6. Certain Eye Medications and Lash Serums

Prescription eye drops (such as those used for glaucoma) and some lash growth serums can cause lashes to grow in faster, unevenly, or in strange directions — making extensions harder to apply and maintain.

Look for serums that nourish lashes naturally without hormone-based ingredients.

7. Vitamin Deficiencies or Supplements

Lack of key nutrients like biotin or iron can weaken your natural lashes. Interestingly, too much of certain supplements (like fish oil) can have the opposite effect — making lashes too slick for the adhesive to grip properly.

8. Hormonal Changes (Menopause & Perimenopause)

As hormones shift, lashes can become thinner, drier, or more fragile — which affects how well extensions bond and how long they last.

That’s why it’s crucial to work with a lash artist who knows how to apply lighter, more suitable extensions for delicate lashes. At HiMi Lashes, we always take lash health seriously and tailor our work to your natural lash condition.

9. Lifestyle Changes

Big shifts like rapid weight loss, crash diets, or intense workout regimens can all affect your body's nutrient balance and, in turn, hair growth — including your lashes.

Troubleshooting Poor Retention

If your lash retention has changed suddenly, ask yourself:

  •  Have I changed skincare or medication?

  •  Am I experiencing more stress than usual?

  •  Have I been in a lot of heat, steam, or humidity?

  •  Is there a possible health factor at play?

Even a small change in your routine can impact how well your extensions hold. Identifying and addressing the cause can go a long way in improving retention.
